Classroom Assistant IV – Transitional Educaton

Transitional Education

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Under general supervision, performs a variety of paraprofessional, off-campus vocational, instructional and clerical tasks as directed by instructional personnel, to work in a variety of settings with students with physical, emotional, educational, or behavioral handicaps in programs that address vocational and educational life skills; and related work as required, consistent with the job description.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Directly responsible to designated administrators.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Assists in the instruction and training of students with from all disability categories, including those with severe disabilities and/or emotional/behavioral disabilities. Educational activities may include facilitating the development of academic, perceptual and psychomotor, social/behavioral, self-help, prevocational and vocational, adaptive, and speech/language skills. Other activities include the delivery of related services such as behavior management, accompanying students on field trips and community outings related to transitional education programming and off-campus vocational job training and assignments, and hygienic assistance and care, including activities related to toileting and eating. Supervision of students may be conducted inside and outside the classroom. Paraprofessional to student ratio at the work site shall not exceed a 1:3 ratio for mobile students. Duties may involve strenuous physical activities such as lifting students from wheel chairs. Training will be provided, as appropriate, in other specialized services such as behavior, crisis prevention/physical management, CPR, occupational/physical therapy, and inclusion/main streaming. Clerical duties may include filing and duplicating materials, maintaining student’s records, computes and records data, and operates audio-visual and computer equipment. Other duties may be assigned based on student and program needs.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

Basic medical information relating to disabilities and needs of high school age students.

Computer applications related to the work, including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.

Community resources available for developing jobs and assisting students in obtaining and maintaining job situations

Post school student support agencies, including applications, procedures and processes.

Techniques for dealing with students with various physical, learning and/or emotional disabilities

Record keeping practices. Skill in:

Training students in employment readiness and on-the-job activities

Assisting students in performing tasks and helping them adapt to work requirements.

Developing effective on-going relationships with representatives of community agencies and participating employers.

Working efficiently, positively, patiently and unemotionally; displaying mature self-control with handicapped students with a variety of disabilities.

Maintaining strict confidentiality regarding program participants.

Communicating effectively both orally and in writing.

Using sound independent judgment within general procedural guidelines.

Maintaining accurate records and preparing periodic reports.

Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Must pass qualifying test.
